What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal dental benefit program that helps make oral health care more affordable for Canadian residents who don't have access to private dental insurance. Sun Life administers the plan for the Government of Canada.

Whether you need a routine dental exam, teeth cleaning, a filling or other restorative treatment, or care for your children's teeth, our team is here to help you keep a healthy smile.

Who qualifies for the CDCP?

You may qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan if you meet all four of these requirements:

  • You don't have access to dental insurance, whether through an employer, a pension plan, a family member's plan or a personal plan.
  • You filed your previous year's tax return in Canada (and so did your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one).
  • Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000 a year.
  • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Children, adults and seniors can all qualify. You won't qualify if you have access to private dental insurance, your adjusted family net income is $90,000 or more, you haven't filed your tax return, or you aren't a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

The Government of Canada decides who is eligible. You can check the requirements on Canada.ca, or contact us and we'll help you understand them.

What does the CDCP cover?

The CDCP helps pay for a wide range of dental care, including:

Orthodontic treatment, such as braces, isn't covered by the CDCP at this time.

Your co-payment depends on your income

Adjusted family net incomeThe CDCP paysYou pay
Under $70,000100% of the CDCP feeNo co-payment
$70,000 to $79,99960% of the CDCP fee40% co-payment
$80,000 to $89,99940% of the CDCP fee60% co-payment

The co-payment is a share of the fee the CDCP sets for each service. If a treatment costs more than the CDCP pays, or a service isn't covered, you pay the difference. Our team will review your coverage and explain any out-of-pocket cost before your treatment begins.

How to apply for the CDCP

  • Check that you qualify: use the requirements above, or check on Canada.ca. We're happy to answer your questions.
  • Gather your information: your Social Insurance Number (SIN), date of birth, full name, home and mailing address, and any dental coverage you have through a government program.
  • Apply: online through your My Service Canada Account or the online application on Canada.ca, or by phone at 1-833-537-4342. A spouse or common-law partner has to apply separately.
  • Get your confirmation: if you're eligible, you'll receive your plan number, member ID and coverage start date. Sun Life then mails you a welcome package with your member card.

FAQs about the CDCP

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The CDCP is a federal government program that helps eligible Canadian residents without private dental insurance pay for dental care. It covers part or all of the cost of preventive, diagnostic, restorative and other dental treatments for people who qualify.

Does Courtice Family Dentistry accept the CDCP?

Yes. Courtice Family Dentistry accepts patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and we offer direct billing.

Will the CDCP cover all my dental costs?

Not always. Your share depends on your adjusted family net income and the treatment you need: under $70,000 there's no co-payment, from $70,000 to $79,999 you pay 40% of the CDCP fee, and from $80,000 to $89,999 you pay 60%. You also pay any amount above what the CDCP covers. Our team will review your coverage before treatment begins.

Does the CDCP cover braces?

No. Orthodontic services such as braces aren't available under the CDCP at this time.

Do I need to apply for the CDCP myself?

Yes. You apply to the Government of Canada, online or by phone at 1-833-537-4342, and your spouse or common-law partner must apply separately. Once you're approved, you'll receive your coverage start date and a welcome package from Sun Life.

Do I need to renew my CDCP coverage?

Yes. You need to renew every year to confirm that you still qualify. Care you receive during a gap in coverage isn't covered.

Can your office help me understand my CDCP coverage?

Yes. Our team can explain your benefits, estimate your out-of-pocket costs and guide you through the process before your appointment.
